Five of Cazenovia Central Schools’ winter varsity teams –  ice hockey, boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ indoor track – have achieved Scholar-Athlete status.

To qualify for the prestigious designation by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), a minimum number of each team’s players must have at least a 90-percent grade point average during the season.

“Thank you all for supporting these student-athletes throughout the school year,” said Cazenovia Athletics Director Mike Byrnes. “Let’s hope for similar results this spring!”

Team (minimum # required) # of qualifying athletes Grade point average* Team roster size
Girls’ basketball (7) 7 90.94 12
Boys’ basketball (7) 7 93.24 13
Ice hockey (8) 8 91.48 24

*To qualify as a NYS Scholar Athlete team, the team “average,”  based on a minimum number of student-athletes’ grades (varying by sport), needs to be 90 percent or higher. Any additional students on a team, who also averaged 90 percent or higher, are considered scholar-athletes, as well, but their scores do not impact the team average used for team qualification. Usually, the highest team average possible is used to rank the team as high as possible across the state by sport.

NYSPHSAA

All of Cazenovia Central Schools’ fall varsity teams – which include football, volleyball, field hockey, boys’ and girls’ cross-country, boys’ and girls’ soccer and girls’ tennis – have achieved Scholar-Athlete status.

To qualify for the prestigious designation by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA), a minimum number of each team’s players must have at least a 90-percent grade point average during the season.

If all varsity sports achieve Scholar-Athlete status in a given academic year, the school earns “School of Distinction” award, according to Athletic Director Mike Byrnes.

“One of our annual goals in the athletic department is to have all varsity teams earn NYSPHSAA Scholar Athlete status,” Mr. Byrnes said.

Cazenovia High School senior Henry Mann confirmed his intent to play Division I lacrosse at Hobart College at a press conference Nov. 20 at the high school.

Mann, a 6-foot-1, 190-pound midfielder who also faces off, verbally committed to Hobart in December 2012, after considering Rutgers, Ohio State, Holy Cross, the U.S. Air Force and Colgate.

“I felt like Hobart was the perfect fit for me after visiting a variety of schools,” Mann said. “Hobart has a great lacrosse tradition and offers big lacrosse in a small school setting. It felt right for me both athletically and academically. I am very excited to play for Coach (Greg) Raymond and hope to contribute to the team.”
